Valeria Shalaway and Nancy Evans had a vision in the early 1980’s to start a Community Clothing Rack. After some fundraising, including a dance at the Orioles with Mike Shalaway as DJ, they opened in a trailer behind the church. The initial dedicated group of volunteers grew in numbers. As they needed more space, they moved downstairs in the church, then upstairs and back downstairs. Today there are 17 amazing volunteers who continue helping those in need of clothing. Three women volunteers because their mother was an original CCR worker. Thank you to ALL of them for continuing the mission of the Community Clothing Rack!
Today the Community Clothing Rack is an important part of our community. They help all who come each week. Multi Service and Boyertown Salvation Army contact them for emergency cases. The social worker from Boyertown High School called about an immediate need for clothing. Within an hour three bags were filled for this family. Oley School District also sends people to pick out clothing.
Professional Clothing is delivered to PA Workwear, an organization that provides clothing for people entering the workforce. Opportunity House Shelter and Pottstown Salvation Army Family Shelter receive requested items. Genesis in Pottstown accepts baby clothing. Items are also delivered to Birdsboro’s Center and a veteran’s group.
Our informational post cards are displayed at the Boyertown Library and United Way. They are given out by the Boyertown and Gilbertsville Police Departments, Gilbertsville Fire and Rescue, St. Andrews meals program and Shephard’s Café at Good Shepherd UCC Church.
This work would not be possible without the wonderful volunteers and the support of St. Luke Church. If you would like to be part of this ministry, talk to Sandra Quicksell or Connie Hukari. It is another way to live generously.
